Often called as "The Coathanger" by the locals because of its arch-based design that resembles a coat hanger, this bridge connects the North Shore and the Sydney central business district. Today, this bridge does not only become one of the busiest bridges in Australia, but it is also an important tourist attraction in Sydney.
A little history about this bridge, it took more than 100 years from the first plan to build the bridge until the construction began. The first plan to build the bridge came from architect Francis Greenway. He proposed the plan to Governor Lachlan Macquarie but the proposal was denied. In 1912, Dr J.J.C. Bradfield's proposal to build the bridge was almost approved, but the war condition made the Legislative Council rejected the proposal and allocated the money to fund the World War I.
After the World War I, Sir Bradfield re-submitted the proposal and it was approved by the Legislative Council. The construction began in July 1923 and the design of the bridge was handled by a British firm, Dorman Long and Co Ltd. The design of the Hell Gate Bridge in New York was the inspiration for the arch design of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The bridge was completed in early 1932 and the official opening ceremony was held on 19 March 1932.
Although Australia was in economic depression in 1932, the opening ceremony drew remarkable crowds. More than 300,000 people gathered around the city and harbor foreshores. To honor Dr. Bradfield's efforts, the main roadway that is stretched across the bridge is named as the Bradfield Highway. This wide bridge now consists of two train lines, eight vehicle lanes, a bicycle lane and a pedestrian.
